I actually think he is Hubert's mother who was herself abused by her mom. And also abused by an older man (Fisher) and got pregnant but wanted to go to Paris to be a singer. And her mother "supported" her getting an abortion and she could never live with the guilt and/or the trauma… I also think there is more than one baby in the story.. eventually she married out of love and got a new baby and first thought it was wonderful but then, with all the difficulties (and an absent husband) wanted to give the baby for adoption… and thus kind of became her own mother
